Adigun Ade Abiodun was educated in Nigeria, the USA and Canada. He obtained his Ph.D. in 1971, in civil engineering from the University of Washington, Seattle, State of Washington, USA; and was a post-doctoral research fellow at the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing in Ottawa.
From his academic post at the University of Ife (UNIFE), he was seconded in 1977, by the Nigerian government, to the United Nations Outer Space Affairs Division (OSAD); since renamed in 1993 as United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UN-OOSA).
In 1981, he was appointed the United Nations Expert on Space Applications; he served the organization in that capacity until his retirement in 1999. Thereafter, he served as the Senior Special Assistant (to the President of Nigeria) on Space Science and Technology (March 2000 – May 2003), and as the Chairman of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of outer Space (June 2004 – June 2006).
He is an honorary board member of Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC). He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the World Space Week Association (WSWA), which he once chaired. He is currently a member of the African Union Space Working Group. Ade Abiodun has lectured and published extensively on different aspects of space science and technology.
